Windows Mobile on a satellite phone, but it’ll cost you

WMExperts

What seemed to be light years ago, we reported during the 2009 CTIA that Terrestar was developing a Windows Mobile satellite phone. It now looks like Terrestar and AT&ampT are partnering up to bring this phone to market. According to Wireless Week, Terrestar is planning on launching a communications satellite on July 1, 2009 to be used in this endeavor.

The satellite phone is reported as being capable of 3G speeds while on AT&ampT’s network or on Terrestar’s satellite networks. But all this comes with a hefty price. On top of the estimated $700 price tag for the Windows Mobile satellite phone and AT&ampT service, it is expected that users will have to shell out $1 per minute to talk over the satellite feed. No word as of yet on how much data roaming will cost.

There was no information available on when this service or the phone will be available.

Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile out of beta

Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile

Don’t tell AT&T or the upcoming Windows Marketplace, but Skype 3.0 is out of beta and ready for download. [via downloadsquad] Version 3.0 added the ability to sent texts and files, and that’s still a go with this official release, along with all the VOIP goodness you’re used to.

Get your download on here, or download the CAB file directly to your phone here.

Micro-USB now becomes the European standard

WMExperts

The European cellphone market, led by the European Commission, has adopted  Micro-USB as the standard for cellphone charging/sync ports. We first made mention of this movement back during the 2009 Mobile World Congress and it appears the movement has picked up a little steam.

Cellphone manufacturers including Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Apple, Motorola, NEC, LG, RIM, Qualcomm, Samsung and Texas Instruments support the standardization.  The surprising name on this list has to be Apple because of its long-standing and widely used licensed, proprietary connector.  The most noticeable company missing from the list is HTC, which uses the mini-USB port.

The standardization should be an across-the-board savings from reducing production costs, eliminating everyone’s drawer full of chargers, and reducing waste at the local landfill.  The first devices under the new standard should hit the shelves in 2010, eventually leading to devices and chargers sold separately.

Now if we can only get that pesky 3.5mm headphone jack as standard.

HTC lines up to sponsor Tour de France team

WMExperts

What do you get if you combine a great outerwear manufacturer with a great smartphone manufacturer? (A really comfortable black slab?) You get Team Columbia-HTC. Owned by High-Road Sports, Team CHTC is prepped for the Tour de France, which begins on Saturday in, er, France. We’ll get a look at the team jersey on Friday.

Said HTC CEO Peter Chou:

"The HTC High Road Sports partnership is a great match of like minded organizations driven by innovation, excellence and competitiveness and we are excited about the opportunity to communicate HTC’s brand value through the great sport of cycling. HTC’s sponsorship of Team Columbia-HTC is one step in HTC’s commitment to increasing its global brand value and recognition."

So, expect to a bunch of HTC logos zooming around on two wheels in the coming weeks.

Thanks, Luke, for the tip!

12MP Nokia camera phones coming in 2010?

Unwired View

Following Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG, Nokia will also launch one or more 12MP camera phones.

Well, at least that’s what PhoneReport says, quoting undisclosed sources from Nokia and Carl Zeiss. The first phone with a 12MP camera could be announced by Nokia as soon as the end of 2009, although it will probably not be available this year.

The upcoming 12MP Nokia handsets may have optical zoom, which should make them, theoretically at least, better than Samsung Pixon 12 and Sony Ericsson Satio. Nokia already has a phone with 3x optical zoom: the rather old N93 / N93i, which features a 3.2MP camera.

(this is the Ỏ 8MP, Nokia’s first and only 8MP smartphone)

It’s not clear yet if the new handsets will be from the Nseries family. If this is the case, it’s possible that we’ll see a Nokia N98 or even a Nokia N99 announced. Of course, this is pure speculation, so it’s better if we wait for something official to come from Nokia.

Rogers Wireless, Canada’s largest mobile carrier, has just announced the Nokia 7510 – its second new Nokia phone to come this month (after the 5800 XpressMusic).

Known as Nokia 7510 SuperNova in Europe, the handset is a clamshell that was also released by T-Mobile in the US.

Rogers’ Nokia 7510 is UMA enabled and thus TalkSpot compatible, “giving Canadians seamless access between a cellular and wireless home internet connection.”

The phone has two Xpress-on changeable covers (in blue and red) and it features a hidden external display with “cool light effects”.

WebOS 1.0.4 available for the Palm Pre

Unwired View

Exactly ten days after releasing webOS 1.0.3, Palm has now launched the webOS 1.0.4 firmware for the Palm Pre.

Unlike the previous update, WebOS 1.0.4 doesn’t bring enhanced applications, but it “addresses several security issues with Palm webOS software”.

Also, it looks like you can no longer install homebrew apps (i.e. unsigned apps) after you’ve updated your Pre to WebOS 1.0.4.

The firmware update should be downloaded automatically, over the air, but users can also check for it manually, “by opening Updates.”

Palm Pre webOS 104 update

For the moment, Palm Pre is available only in the US and only from Sprint. The smartphone should be soon released in Canada (by Bell) and across Europe.
