SMS security hole detailed

WMExperts

Yesterday we warned about a possible threat to basic Windows Mobile security. Turns out things are pretty serious across most GSM-type phones. ZDNet breaks it down:

An attacker could exploit the hole to make calls, steal data, send text messages, and do more or less anything a person can do on their iPhone, researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner claimed at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas.

That’s certainly not good. And it’s not limited to just the iPhone.

Meanwhile, a bug in the code written by HTC that controls the user interface on Windows Mobile devices could also be exploited via the SMS messages to create a situation where there are no buttons to push, so the phone cannot be used, said Miller.

Yep, that’s bad. The good news is that Miller and Mulliner say it would take a couple of weeks for someone to compile the code needed for such an attack, and they’re working with carriers and manufacturers to patch the exploit.

So are we worried? Not too much. It sounds serious, certainly. But we′re not going be pulling our batteries while we sleep. If it’s that bad, the carriers and manufacturers will patch it.

We hope.

HTC Hero to be Available from Sprint in October

Mobilewhack.com

Just as we suspected, the HTC Hero seems to be heading to Sprint. The picture here even shows a date for the HTC arrival. According to it Sprint should launch the phone on October 11. Of course there’s no indication that the document in the picture is a coming from Sprint and it could have been easily faked.

Besides the Hero, other phones are also mentioned. The Samsung Q is apparently an Android phone made by Samsung and heading to Sprint while the Aries is the CDMA version of the Gemini, a BlackBerry phone that will arrive soon from Verizon too. As for the Lotus 2 from LG, the handset is only interesting right now as there’s no information about it.

Getting back to the Hero, we’ll just have to say that we expect Sprint to launch it anyway so they could very well confirm it already.

Firefox 4.0 mockup screenshots showcased

Mobilewhack.com

Mozilla is hard at work on Firefox 4.0 and have today taken the time to show us a mockup screen shot of the browser’s new interface.

Does the interface look familiar? It should as it bares an uncanny resemblance to that of Google’s Chrome. I’m not complaining as I’ve become quite the fan of Chrome’s interface but Mozilla seems a bit unsure.

Below is a list of positives and negatives of the new UI compiled by Mozilla:

Positives:
- Save Vertical Space
- Efficiency/Remove Visual Complexity – Right now the tabs have to be connected to something. So we are adding an extra visual element for them to connect to.
- Shorter Mouse Distance to Page Controls.
Negatives:
- Breaks Consistency/Familiarity – Moving things confuses existing users.
- Title is MIA – With the space removed from the titlebar you only get the truncated version in the tab.
- Longer Mouse Distance to Tabs – Takes longer to mouse to a tab.
- Lost Space – Sandwiched in between the application icon and the window widgets you lose some space.

So, readers, what are you opinions on Firefox’s new look? Good? Bad? Leave it in the comments.

17-year old sues Amazon after they delete his homework

Mobilewhack.com

It seems that the Kindle’s cracked screens aren’t the only thing Amazon is getting sued about. This time, a 17 year old high school student is sueing Amazon because they deleted his homework, literally.

If you’ll recall a while back, Amazon, without notice, deleted digital copies of George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm from every Kindle that had it. Well the 17 year old in question was reportedly using the Kindle to take notes on 1984 for a summer assignment. Once the book was deleted, so were his notes, leading the teen to bring forth such a lawsuit.

The law suit seeks not only punitive damages but also seeks to forbid Amazon from doing the same thing in the future.

HTC Touch Diamond 2 at FCC

That’s right, folks, there’s a an HTC TOPA210 (aka the Topaz, aka Warhawk, aka Touch Diamond 2) lurking round the Federal Communications Commission. And lo and behold, it’s sporting the 850MHz and 1900MHz bands used in the U.S. by AT&T.

Now, that doesn’t mean that AT&ampT will ever release the Touch Diamond 2. They didn’t (and still don’t) carry the original Touch Diamond. But it does mean that if you manage to find one of these phones either through importing or some deal with the devil, you’ll be rocking 3G speeds here.

Now, AT&T, about the Touch Pro 2 …

We’ve only had an inkling of the HTC Mega, but that hasn’t stopped the ROM from the device from leaking out. And lookie there, it’s a fresh version of TouchFLO, al la the Sense UI that first appeared for Android phones.

If you’re of the ROM flashing variety, head on over at XDA and give it a shot, and let us know in the comments what you think.

How does Microsoft know it has a hit on its hands? Two words: Walt Mosspuppet. The above anti-Windows 7 video may be NSFW if your place of business frowns on long rants, guns, venereal disease, threats against Steve Ballmer and rampant Mac fanboyism.

We can only hope we get the same abuse with Windows Mobile 7. But, dayum,  this is funny …
