LG Windows Phone 7 Series Prototype Fondled on The Engadget Show

LG Windows Phone 7 Series prototype

Ever since Microsoft showed off Windows Phone 7 Series at Mobile World Congress, one of the major questions has been what kind of hardware can we expect from the device manufacturers. All we saw in Barcelona was a developer device.

But today on The Engadget Show, Microsoft’s Aaron Woodman brought a new toy. It was a prototype LG device, with the Windows Phone 7 Series OS, a sliding QWERTY keyboard — which was a bit of a surprise — all of the hardware buttons that we’ve been told to expect, a 5-megapixel camera with flash, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Let’s reiterate that this was a prototype, and we′d kind of like to see a production unit with a little more sophistication. An new OS of this caliber deserves something that at least looks like more than the hardware the old Windows Mobile (sorry, but it is) runs on.

Oh, and the fact that Paul and Nilay posted their hands-on with the LG device as The Engadget Show was taping live was more than a little sick. [Engadget]

We still don’t have a clear picture if the new Windows Phone 7 Series operating system (also known as "Metro") will actually be made available on any current hardware (the HTC HD2 is a possibility, but its standing changes day by day). But you might be able to at least make your phone look like it’s got what it takes, thanks to some clever skinning. Everything′s still in the early stages and is a little janky, but you get the idea. iPod Touch explodes in classroom

500x_explodingipod

Remember when people were complaining about their laptop batteries spontaneously combusting? Well, it would appear that the iPod Touch battery is capable of the same ability.

Apparently, some kid at Pentucket Regional High School was trying to fix their iPod Touch, and was “rubbing wires against the battery, which became very hot, then exploded”. I suppose that there is a lesson to be learned here: don’t go futzing with your iPod like this.

340x_32406450-32406455-slargeRemember how iTunes was about to sell its ten billionth song? Well, the guy who bought it was Louie Sulcer, who purchased Johnny Cash “Guess Things Happen That Way”.

As it so happened this way, he got a call from Steve Jobs. Unfortunately, he didn’t believe that it was Steve. It wasn’t until he checked his caller ID that read “Apple” did he believe. He won a $10,000 iTunes card and can tell his friends that he almost hung up on the Jobs-man himself.

Recent Cliq update is causing some problems

Mobilewhack.com

moto_cliq_blur_androidThere has been a lot of word that Motorola’s update to the Cliq has been causing more problems than it solves.

Users of update 1.3.18 have been complaining to T-Mobile about the inability to log into MOTOBLUR, Bluetooth connectivity issues, SMS lagging and crashing, problems with the virtual keyboard, dimmed displays, and the reseting of the clock. Apparently, the issue is with Motorola and not T-Mobile, but we’ll see if it gets fixed. You might want to hold off on downloading the latest for now.

Thanko has a mouse that is a speaker and microphone

Mobilewhack.com

thanko_usb_mouse_speaker-620x387Thanko has made some interesting gadgets in the past, and this particular one is somewhat unique. It is a mouse with an integrated speaker.

It is designed to plug into the PC via USB and the headphone jack. You can also jack it up to the microphone, in case you want to use your mouse as a microphone for Skype calls. In all honesty, I don’t think I have ever wanted that, really.

Well, you can get the 1000dpi/USB mouse on Thanko’s website for a mere $20. Let’s see if that works out for us.

Not only could Verizon get the Nexus One, but possibly on March 23rd

Verizon-Nexus-One

When we last reported on the launch of the Nexus One from Verizon, we told you that it was in the FCC machine, and that we would know in a few months.

How about one month? March 23, 2010 is the rumor floating around about this guy, and the source of the leak doesn’t seem to be from Verizon, but Google. That just happens to be during CTIA, by the way. I guess something big is gonna go down, isn’t it?

Vodafone UK to launch the Google Nexus One in April

Unwired View

According to initial rumors, the Nexus One should have been available via Vodafone since late January or early February. However, Google’s first phone is not ready yet for Voda.

And although there hasn’t been any official announcement about the exact release date of Nexus One via Vodafone, it looks like the carrier’s subscribers in the UK will be able to buy the smartphone starting April.

Telegraph.co.uk has it that “sources close to both companies have confirmed that April is when the company will have a realistic chance of being ready for the launch.”

For the moment, there are no clear details on pricing, but the Nexus One might cost €150 with a Vodafone contract agreement. Vodafone will probably not offer the Nexus One directly to customers. Instead, you’ll be able to buy the handset via Google’s online phone store.

Vodafone aside, the Google Nexus One is coming soon to Verizon, too (by the way, Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless).

Another new Samsung phone is the Samsung i9000, which was recently spotted at the Wi-Fi Alliance website.

Samsung i9000 wifi Windows Phone 7

We don’t know much about the Samsung 􂢸, but the phone features Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and it might be the successor of the Samsung i8000 Omnia II – maybe named Samsung Omnia III and maybe running Windows Phone 7 Series? We’ll find out soon (hopefully).
